Sharing the Experiences of Immigrants

Moving Stories is a tool for sharing migration narratives. We seek written contributions, images, artwork, oral accounts, and other forms of storytelling that cover any aspect of migration. This project helps us to understand how narratives foster connections between different communities and how they work to influence policy.

About Moving Stories

Moving Stories is part of the Incubator for Transdisciplinary Futures at Washington University in St. Louis. We are an interdisciplinary team of faculty and graduate students from departments across the humanities, social sciences, and studio art. We believe that migration is a multifaceted experience that goes beyond stories of displacement and that includes moments of joy and celebration.

  • Moving Stories in the Making: An Exhibition of Migration Narratives

Opening February 3, 2024 at the Luminary in St. Louis. This exhibition features a number of nationally-recognized and local artists whose work spans a broad range of geopolitical sites and pushes the definition of "narratives" across media.
  • Collect Diverse Narratives. In conjunction with the exhibition, we will stage a series of workshops designed to engage the local community and encourage the sharing of narratives. These stories are as varied as the people who live them, reflecting the struggles, dreams, and triumphs of those who have embarked on incredible journeys.
  • Build an App. Our app, a dynamic platform designed to house and showcase these stories, is at the heart of the project. Users can explore, contribute, and connect through these powerful narratives. This app will create a lasting repository of migration stories.
  • Foster Dialogue. Moving Stories is a catalyst for meaningful conversations about migration and its impact on our communities. By sharing these narratives, we aim to bridge cultural divides, build empathy, and encourage a more inclusive society.
  • Academic Engagement. We are committed to advancing the field of migration studies within Washington University. Moving Stories features academic events, panel discussions, and collaborations with experts in the field to establish a "migration hub" within the university. This hub will promote research and understanding of migration issues on a regional and national scale.

Moving Stories invites all to be a part of this extraordinary project. Whether you're an immigrant with a story to share, an artist eager to contribute, or simply someone who believes in the transformative potential of narratives, there's a place for you in our community. Together, we can center art, storytelling, and research that changes the conversation around migration and moves towards a more inclusive world.
